How Stress Can Impair Your Immune System

And what you can do about it...

When we are stressed, our cortisol levels raise. If these levels stay too high for too long, this can impair and weaken your immune system. As well as this, stress can elevate inflammation levels in the body, which can make you more susceptible to viruses and infections.

Lowering cortisol and keeping stress to a minimum is crucial for your health, especially in winter. The good news is, there are many tools you can use to help.

Ice baths are an extremely effective and favourable way to combat stress, boost endorphins and improve mental well-being.

Introducing your body to extreme cold actually initially spikes cortisol levels, as well as adrenaline and norepinephrine. However, after a short period of time, cortisol levels actually begin to decrease and your parasympathetic nervous system kicks in. This induces a state of calm and even euphoria.

Study suggests that cold therapy often and over time can drastically reduce inflammation, decrease cortisol, stress and anxiety.

Other tools such as breathwork, meditation and exercise can also help.
